Summer in the City: The Best Outdoor Dining in Manhattan, According to Indagare Editors

Senior editor and Manhattanite Elizabeth Harvey shares her favorite spots for outdoor snacking and sipping in Manhattan, New York City, whether you’re looking for the perfectly chilled martini after work, a solo glass of wine paired with an afternoon read or a lively weekend catch-up with loved ones flush with sharing plates.

There is plenty to complain about in Manhattan, and the increasingly oppressive heat of summer in the city turns the dial up on local angst. Still, days in Manhattan are ripe with moments for magic in every season. Summer invites us to revel in an alternate reality, and the energy shift is palpable with the flow of people entering and leaving the island. In summer, we can meet on a perfect-weather Tuesday for aperitivo with friends at 5:00 p.m., and stay out past midnight; we can let ourselves get caught in a torrential thunderstorm and then tumble into the nearest establishment, soaking, for an impromptu meal; we can spend hundreds on caviar and Champagne while perched at a haphazard table next to a subway grate, watching the neighbors flit by (somehow, it's charming?). To savor all this and more, these are my top places.

New & Notable

Guardian at W New York Union Square •  Union Square

Union Square welcomed its first and only rooftop bar with the spring opening of Guardian—the final phase of the historic W New York Union Square's $100-million-dollar renovation. Guests can enjoy downtown views from the wraparound space, 22 floors up, and protection from the elements, thanks to the retractable roof. Come for upscale vibes (especially at sunset), crowd-pleasing bites and cocktails. (The al fresco space joins Seahorse, a glossy seafood brasserie that opened to much acclaim on the hotel's ground floor in September.)

Le Dive West Village •  West Village

The owners of one of my favorite wine bars in the city—the Parisian-style Le Dive—has recently opened a second location in the West Village, following the success of the original on the Lower East Side and of sister restaurant Bar Bianchi (which is equally popular but Milan-inspired). The new Le Dive West Village offers solid sidewalk seating set back behind flower boxes and sporting bistro chairs; opt for a seat under the awning for a bit of shade. The well-edited menu showcases natural French wines, storied cocktails (like the Vesper and French 75) and very tasty small plates (the sardines, ricotta, artichoke and petite salade are among my go-tos).

Dahlia’s Garden and Terrace at The Ritz-Carlton New York, NoMad •  NoMad

The rooftop terrace at The Ritz-Carlton New York, NoMad has been transformed into a garden-themed summer pop-up with a prix fixe menu featuring seasonal, international cuisine like roasted figs with honey, octopus ceviche and caviar toast (it is a ticketed experience starting at $150 dollars per person). Craft cocktails served in playful glassware (like the Dahlia Hugo and Lavender Chartreuse Freeze) and prime views of the Empire State Building make this a particularly photogenic spot for golden hour.

Dear Margo •  Upper East Side

One of the top newcomers to the Upper East Side has sidewalk seating for dinner, with lunch and brunch services coming soon. The menu is Mediterranean, with a choice of delicious spreads, salads, mezzes and skewers, as well as grilled mains and plenty of summer produce.

Classic

Tavern On the Green •  Central Park West

There are few places better for soaking in summer sunshine than the 843-acre oasis that is Central Park—and Tavern On the Green is its most iconic restaurant (rivaled only by the Boathouse). The Tavern, which dates back to 1934, serves all-day drinks and elegant New American fare on a romantic, spacious patio tented with twinkling lights and views of Sheep Meadow (from which the restaurant borrows its insignia).

Grand Banks •  Tribeca

A staple of the Manhattan outdoor dining scene since 2014, Grand Banks is a 175-seat restaurant located on a historic wooden schooner docked on the Hudson at Pier 25 (you can't miss the iconic yellow-and-white-striped awning off the mast). Though predominantly an oyster bar, Grand Banks also serves lobster, scallops, fresh fish and other raw bar mainstays, as well as select salads, sides and desserts. Reservations are coveted—and ideal for happy hour or date night.

Caffé Dante •  Greenwich Village

For serious people-watching and hours of spritz-fueled gossip downtown, the destination must be Dante. The original establishment on Macdougal Street, which opened in 1915, remains as sceney as ever for aperitivo or brunch al fresco; it's one of those few places where vying for a tiny sidewalk table still feels worth it (at least for drinks). If you can sneak away for the "Negroni Sessions" seating between 3:00 and 5:00 p.m., the best of the bitters go for only $10 dollars a glass (unheard of!).

Bar Pisellino •  West Village

Channeling the leisurely allure of the all-day Roman café, Bar Pisellino is another mainstay of the sceney downtown Italian guard. There's nearly always a line for the tiny tables lining Grove Street (it's walk-in only), so it's wise to come on an off-hour if you're impatient for a seat. Once real estate has been secured, I recommend savoring the fruits of your labor by lingering over sgroppinos, spagliatos or martinis (if that's your preference)—and nibbling on a series of spuntini and tramezzini. (Bar Pisellino is also a great place to wait for an opening at sister restaurants Via Carota, I Sodi, Buvette and The Commerce Inn; plus, don't forget they open at 8:00 a.m. every day for coffee and pastries.)

JG Melon •  Upper East Side

The sidewalk seating outside JG Melon is nothing special—but the signature green-and-white-checkered tablecloths, iconic burgers, cottage fries and martinis and lively local crowd make this 1972 Upper East Side institution a favorite for happy hour, brunch or a midsummer bite after the sun has set on Manhattan.

Neighborhood Place

Wayla •  Lower East Side

The leafy, boho-chic backyard garden patio at Wayla remains (somewhat of) a Lower East Side outdoor dining secret. Come here for family-style Thai dishes like braised pork belly, crab curry, fried rice and vegetarian noodles, then cool off with a refreshing cocktail from the mixology menu (standouts including the Bangkok Surprise and Land of Smiles).

Il Buco Alimentari & Vineria •  NoHo

With excellent, authentic cuisine and a warm, stylish atmosphere, Il Buco Alimentari & Vineria is one of my favorite Italian restaurants in Manhattan, year-round. (The market greens salad and bucatini cacio e pepe are must-orders.) When the weather is nice, enjoy alfresco seating and people-watching at the sidewalk tables along Great Jones, or book the upstairs terrace for a private event.

Hudson Clearwater •  West Village

The ivy-covered patio tucked behind Hudson Clearwater delivers a homey West Village townhouse setting and seasonal new American plates, with something for every taste in your party on the menu. Our team prefers the buzzy vibe at brunch or lunch on the weekends.

Orsay •  Upper East Side

Orsay brings the old-school Parisian brasserie to the Upper East Side. The sidewalk terrace is a local haunt in good weather, but don’t miss a drink at the 24-foot pewter-topped bar.

L'Accolade •  West Village

Also French-focused, L’Accolade is a natural wine bar and bistro with an under-the-radar back patio on Bleecker Street in the West Village. A generously timed happy hour is served from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on weekdays and from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. on Saturdays.

Good for Group

Pebble Bar at The Rink •  Midtown West

Saturday Night Live stronghold Pebble Bar is back this summer with its seasonal pop-up on the Rockefeller Center skating rink. Under striped umbrellas, guests can enjoy views of Art Deco architecture while sipping on frozen concoctions like the “Pebble Colada” as well as traditional drinks and bar snacks. It’s a great spot for after-work or pre-theater get-togethers.

Chez Zou •  Hudson Yards

Above a Mediterranean sister restaurant by the same name, Chez Zou is an upscale cocktail lounge with a spacious outdoor patio overlooking Hudson Yards. The beverage program was created by an alum of The NoMad and Eleven Madison Park, and the patio has its own custom menu, with sharing plates like the feta pizza and Moroccan fried chicken sliders and playful sips like the Pickle Spritz and the Bekaa Highball with frozen grapes.

Electric Lemon •  Hudson Yards

From 24 floors up, this rooftop terrace at the Equinox Hotel has uninterrupted views over the Hudson—perfect for sunset—and large tables punctuated by water and fire features. The menu is fresh, sustainable and health-oriented—in support of the hotel’s wider programming—but guests can also find a sampling of treats like cocktails and flatbreads. The crowd leans sophisticated and sleek at Electric Lemon, making this a great spot for a relaxed yet refined celebration.

The Yacht Club •  Hudson Yards

Last summer, the team behind Grand Banks opened The Yacht Club, a massive marina-themed restaurant on the 10th floor of the Starrett‑Lehigh Building facing Pier 66, with expansive Hudson River views and an outdoor “Lido” deck. Come here for lobster, grilled fish and oysters (there is a dedicated "oyster sommelier" on staff)—or make an afternoon of it in one of the rentable cabanas. Guests can also book tickets for special events like a viewing of the Fourth of July fireworks.

Gitano •  Seaport

An outpost of the legendary Tulum discotheque, Gitano New York City has brought The Jungle Room to a 15,000-square-foot waterfront space at the Seaport, with views of the Brooklyn Bridge. The terrace is enclosed with parlor palms and is perfect for mezcal cocktails and tostadas before a night of dancing inside.

Foodie Favorite

Tatiana •  Central Park West

Tatiana’s outdoor tables overlooking Lincoln Center are among the city’s most coveted this summer—though the patio is walk-in only, which could improve your chances—drawing theatergoers and serious food obsessives alike for chef Kwame Onwuachi’s award-winning Afro-Caribbean cuisine. Order the curried goat patties, crispy okra, Mom Duke’s shrimp and BBQ collard greens alongside a rum cocktail at golden hour, when the entire fountain plaza glows with true New York energy. (Also, leave room for dessert.)

Crevette •  West Village

From the team behind seafood favorite Dame, Crevette brings a Riviera breeze to a spacious corner on Downing Street, where a cluster of sidewalk bistro tables fill nightly with downtown it-girls and restaurant-industry regulars lingering over martinis and seafood towers. The menu incorporates French, Spanish and Italian coastal influences (think: crab agnolotti, fennel salad, razor clams, chilled prawns and excellent crudo). The prices are steep, but the food is quite good and the wine list has some gems.

Jupiter •  Midtown West

Joining Pebble Bar in the Rockefeller Center skating rink for a summer pop-up is Jupiter, a regional Italian restaurant opened in 2022 by the team behind SoHo institution King. Foodies will be delighted by the fan-favorite appetizers (arancini, burrata, fritto misto), handmade pastas, salads, wood-fired vegetables and proteins—as well as the robust list spotlighting the next generation of Italian winemakers. While Jupiter makes the most of its subterranean space in winter months, the terrace setup brings a welcome breath of fresh air, especially for aperitivo.

Fish Cheeks •  NoHo

The tightly packed sidewalk tables outside Fish Cheeks create one of downtown’s liveliest outdoor scenes, with groups crowding around icy beers and fiery Thai seafood dishes late into the evening. Go for the spicy coconut crab curry, steamed fish with herbs and crab fried rice—then stay for the kinetic atmosphere on Bond Street as the nearby nightlife gets going.

Anton’s •  West Village

With its corner location and white-tableclothed sidewalk seating along Hudson Street, Anton's marries old New York nostalgia with West Village taste to make that rare blend: a hot-spot restaurant with excellent cuisine. The menu features seasonal European dishes, and the crowd draws a mix of well-heeled locals for marathon meals and martinis.

Best Views

Overstory •  Financial District

At the southern tip of Manhattan, on the 64th floor of a landmark Art Deco tower, Overstory’s wraparound outdoor terrace delivers jaw-dropping—and slightly terrifying, for the heights-averse—views over New York Harbor, the Brooklyn Bridge and FiDi. The cocktails are meticulous—mixology as an art form—and are often built around unusual spirits and house infusions. Pop downstairs afterward for a meal at fine-dining sister restaurant Saga for a truly festive evening (and maybe return to Overstory for a nightcap).

Nubeluz •  NoMad

Suspended over Broadway at The Ritz-Carlton New York, NoMad is the rooftop cocktail bar Nubeluz, a glowing, glamorous, jewel-toned space designed by Martin Brudnizki, serving sweeping panoramas and craft cocktails from 500 feet up. The outdoor terrace here offers picture-perfect views of the Empire State Building (and much of Manhattan). The culinary program is helmed by José Andrés, so bites include tapas and build-your-own charcuterie boards.

Leonessa •  Battery Park City

Leonessa is a rooftop aperitivo bar atop the Conrad New York Downtown that opened in 2025. The concept was designed in partnership with the resident queen of New York’s bubbles market, Ariel Arce (behind Tokyo Record Bar and Roscioli). Here, guests can enjoy prime views of the Statue of Liberty, amid Amalfi lemon-yellow couches and free-flowing custom Campari concoctions. (Leonessa took over what used to be the Loopy Doopy Rooftop Bar, which became Instagram-famous for its popsicle cocktails.)

Dog-Friendly

Under the New York City "Dining With Dogs" policy, furry companions are allowed in any unenclosed outdoor dining area (including patios and sidewalk cafes), provided they arrive directly from the street and do not pass through the indoor restaurant space. Still, these are a few of our preferred—and particularly canine-catering—establishments:

The Rooftop at The Manner •  SoHo

The Rooftop at The Manner—one of Manhattan’s hottest new design hotels—offers a supremely chic dog-friendly outdoor scene downtown. Canines under 30 pounds are welcome to join their owners on this intimate, tucked-away terrace for tapas, sangria and frozen palomas, among a fashion and creative crowd that tends to linger well past sunset.

Shake Shack Madison Square Park •  Flatiron

The original Madison Square Park Shake Shack remains one of New York’s summer rituals, especially for dog owners grabbing burgers, crinkle fries and frozen custard at the café tables spread beneath the park’s shady trees. The space fills from morning to night with nearby office workers, neighborhood regulars, tourists and plenty of happy pups; after a play session at Jemmy's Dog Run just a few steps away, they can join in on the dining experience with a "pooch-ini" (frozen vanilla custard with peanut butter sauce) or ShackBurger dog biscuits.

Talea Beer Co. West Village Taproom •  West Village

Talea’s bright, flower-filled corner patio has become one of the West Village’s most relaxed afternoon hangouts, especially for locals stopping in with dogs after West Side Highway walks. The women-owned brewery is known for approachable, often fruit-forward craft beers, frozen cocktails and seasonal spritzes. Bites like spicy pickles, Bavarian pretzels and pesto toast are served here; however, those in-the-know will pick up pies from L'Industrie Pizzeria next door (these neighbors have a partnership).

Table for One

The Mark Restaurant by Jean-Georges •  Upper East Side

There are few better solo setups in Manhattan than a tiny striped table outside The Mark Hotel after a visit to the Met or shopping the Madison Avenue boutiques. The all-day restaurant by Jean-Georges still keeps true New York hours, from 7:00 a.m. to 1:00 a.m. straight, daily. We recommend coming for a leisurely lunch—order the truffle pizza, crispy salmon sushi or famous Mark burger alongside an iced tea or glass of rosé, then settle into one of the city’s best people-watching scenes as impeccably dressed Upper East Siders drift by.

Corner Bar •  Lower East Side

At the base of the gorgeous Nine Orchard hotel on Canal Street, Corner Bar has become one of downtown’s best solo-dining spots outdoors thanks to its polished sidewalk tables under a cheerful striped awning, low-key yet stylish energy and reliably excellent cocktails. The menu celebrates the classic tavern, worldwide—think shrimp cocktail, burgers and steaks—and the crowd is a mix of writers, gallery-goers and fashion insiders filtering through the Lower East Side.

Sant Ambroeus •  Upper East Side & SoHo

The Madison Avenue and Lafayette Street locations of Milanese institution Sant Ambroeus remain old-guard New York café scenes, which are also excellent for a sophisticated solo bite. Crowded sidewalk tables fill from breakfast through aperitivo with polished locals and loyal regulars. Come for cappuccino and pistachio cornetti in the morning or sandwiches and Bellinis later in the day; at any hour, this is a place that invites lingering.

Lafayette •  NoHo

Commanding a large stretch of sidewalk on Lafayette Street, Andrew Carmellini's decadent French café, bakery and brasserie invites solo guests to seek refuge behind a dense display of planters, under signature cerulean umbrellas. Always crowded with a mix of tourists and locals, Lafayette allows individuals to blend in—and tuck in for a treat.
